About
The Learning Plant
The Learning Plant was "born" in March of 1978 with
7 games of Jewish content, designed by me and a few flannel
materials imported from Israel, plus a good supply of Judy/Instructo
Flannelboards. Within a year or 2 the Learning Plant was producing
a 32 page catalog. By 1984, the format we are still committed
to - a 64 page catalog - was established as an annual publication.
We publish a few items from a few authors, but no longer accept
anything from other authors. We do, however, continue to publish
everything we began publishing years ago.
History of the Learning Plant
From my background as a Jewish educator with years in the Jewish classroom at
every grade level from kindergarden thru high school as well as adults, I started
the Jewish Teacher Resource Center in Milwaukee (which is still in existence)
- where my thrust was to teach teachers to use creative materials in their classrooms.
This led to my publishing some of the materials I had created.
The original intent of the Learning Plant was to make teachers all over the country
aware of the availability of creative materials to brighten their classrooms
and to assist them in their teaching and curricular needs. It became my responsibility
to find more of these materials and make them available to teachers everywhere.
Then, in 1988 I made a concerted effort to also reach the Jewish family - including
grandparents, which meant an increase in the number of book titles we carry,
not just those suitable for curriculum, but those which make a good read - starting
with toddlers. Now our mailing list includes as many families as it does schools!
While the majority of our customers are in the US, we have many Canadian schools
and families who are regular customers and quite a few from other parts of the
world as well.
Behind Our Name
I chose the name Learning Plant because I see the child, the student as similar
to a plant, starting out with a small shoot and when blessed with sunshine
and rain, growing to its full potential often culminating in a beautiful
bloom. |
